I like your process. MY approach would be slightly different, ignoring politics entirely and just talking about how to spot lies, how to spot 'evidence' that isn't, how to spot an 'argument' that is just plain not logical or reasonable. Essentially a beginners guide to critical thinking, but no need to call it that because names mean nothing and become simply another thing to demonize. Republicans have already demonized science and honest reporting, no need to give them another name to demonize. Plus these 'skills' are useful in people's everyday lives, so use those examples for teaching.
