Rule of Law vs. Rule of One
Illegal deployments blocked, gerrymanders struck down, tariffs overturned. It's still on us to keep freedom from slipping away.
For those of us paying attention, this chapter of American life can feel demoralizing. Each day, seemingly, another norm eroded, law broken, dignity ignored. Which is all the more reason we should allow ourselves to feel hopeful and encouraged when the rule of law prevails — even just a little bit!
Take this week’s ruling by federal Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco, who found that the Trump administration illegally deployed National Guard troops to Los Angeles this June for immigration‑raid protests. Crowd control, traffic blockades, arrest support — none of that is allowed under the Posse Comitatus Act, which explicitly forbids federal troops from performing law enforcement roles on U.S. soil.
The judge warned that what the administration was building looked dangerously like a national police force with the president as its chief, and he had to slam the breaks.
Now pair that with another federal court blocking Trump’s sweeping tariffs because only Congress, not a solo president, gets to write tax law — and you've got another reminder that checks and balances aren’t optional.
And then there's Utah — where pro‑democracy litigation by our strategic partner Campaign Legal Center just restored voter‑approved redistricting reform, voided a gerrymandered map, and put a timeline and teeth back into fair representation.
And Then There’s Crypto…
Just as the courts were putting on the brakes, another part of the news cycle went into overdrive: the Trump family’s new crypto token launch. Suddenly, they were looking at a paper windfall in the billions, mere hours after the market opened. Moral of the story? Power and profiteering move fast — often faster than our rules and norms can catch up.
That combo — military overreach, economic centralization, judicial pushback, and digital gold rush — feels like a snapshot of the modern battleground for democracy. It’s a call to action, not applause.
Why Bright America Exists — and Why You Should Care
Here’s what encourage me: none of these rulings would have happened if people had stayed on the sidelines. Citizens, lawyers, civic groups — WE SHOWED UP. We sued, funded litigation, argued in courtrooms, and refused to let constitutional norms gather dust.
That’s where Bright America is pitching in: fueling the cases that remind our courts that they exist to uphold the law, not rubber-stamp raw ambition.
The rule of law doesn’t hold on its own — it holds because we all hold it.
The High Stakes — and the Heart
Want to know what democracy looks like in real time? It looks like courtrooms swinging back executive overreach; legislatures being told they can’t erase voter mandates; watchdogs spotlighting tech wealth blowing up overnight. It looks awkward, tense, and absolutely alive.
The choice is ours: breathe life into the guardrails, or watch them rust.
At Bright America, we’re here to shine light into darkness — together.
Absolutely. It’s very much a hopeful indication that the court system will hold. Of course, it’s of no import until The Supremes say their say. I’m much less hopeful about their ruling.
Hitler's decrees were blocked in the courts initially. We must keep the momentum going to stop the insane maniac in the White House
