The Cost of Disengagement: Why Americans Are Tuning Out Politics—but Can’t Escape the Price Hikes

Most Americans have stopped paying attention to politics — but soaring costs are hitting home. We unpack how to reach disengaged voters where they are with real stories and real solutions.

In my recent Bright America Live conversation with Terry Holt, we talked about a hard truth: most Americans have tuned out the daily chaos, the partisan fights, even the attacks on our institutions and the existential threat to the Rule of Law — which was identified by a plurality of Bright America readers as the biggest problem facing our country right now (linking below in case you missed it!).

The Americans who aren’t reading this email — or anything similar — see the dysfunction, and they’ve chosen to disengage. What they can’t ignore, though, is the skyrocketing cost of nearly everything: housing, groceries, childcare, healthcare.

That’s why we started the

campaign. It’s a nonpartisan effort to center the issues Americans feel every day and hold leaders accountable for failing to deliver long-term solutions. Americans aren’t asking for perfection — we’re asking for the challenges we face to be taken seriously.

And by meeting disengaged Americans where they are, we have an opportunity to awaken even more citizens to the greatest cost our country could pay — the loss of our democracy.
