The startling new Supreme Court ruling no one is talking about
Here’s why it threatens fairness, accountability, and the health of our republic's independent watchdogs
Late this week, the Supreme Court made a huge decision that affects how our government works but hasn’t been getting enough attention.
What happened?
It decided that the President can fire leaders of important independent agencies without needing any reason at all. These independent agencies—like the Federal Election Commission (FEC), the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and even the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)—exist specifically to protect all Americans by staying free from political influence.
These agencies act like watchdogs, keeping an eye on powerful government officials, big companies, and political groups to ensure they play fair. They make sure our elections aren't rigged, our internet and media remain open and fair, and protect us from shady business practices. Until now, these agencies were meant to be insulated from politics, ensuring their decisions were based on facts and fairness, not political pressure.
Why this matters
Justice Elena Kagan and two other justices strongly disagreed with the Court's ruling. In her powerful dissent, Kagan explained that giving the President so much control to fire these watchdogs is extremely risky. It means the President can now get rid of anyone who challenges their decisions or stands in their way. Justice Kagan warned that the Court moved too quickly, without considering how this decision could damage our democracy and lead to fewer checks and balances.
By opening the door for these agencies to be controlled by politics, the Supreme Court is putting our democracy in danger. When watchdogs can't do their job freely, powerful politicians can manipulate elections, silence critics, and protect corrupt practices. This situation weakens trust in our government and threatens our rights as citizens.
There’s still hope
Even though this ruling is alarming, there is still hope. Advocacy organizations such as Bright America and our strategic partner Campaign Legal Center are already taking action. We're calling on Congress to reinforce the independence of these crucial agencies. This fight is not over, and we need your help to ensure our democracy remains strong and accountable.
Our responsibility now is clear: we must act to protect these independent agencies and ensure they remain free from political interference. Our government is supposed to represent and serve everyone equally — not just those in power.
As naive as that may sound, it’s never too late for us to demand better from our leaders.
What you can do right now
This is where you come in. Call your representatives in Congress today. Ask them to pass stronger laws that protect the independence of agencies like the FEC, FTC, FCC, and CFPB from political pressure.
Support advocacy groups like the Campaign Legal Center, which are on the front lines of defending our democracy.
Talk about this issue with friends and family. Educate others about why independent agencies matter, and encourage them to get involved too. The more we speak out, the louder our voice becomes. Together, we can push back against this dangerous ruling.
Our democracy relies on fairness, accountability, and independence. Let’s protect our democracy’s watchdogs and secure a better future for all Americans.
Thank you for writing this. This is yet another decision that demonstrates that the Roberts court is destroying the foundation of our democracy.
